When to Visit Turkey: A Month by Month Guide
People ask us this more than any other question, and the honest answer is that Turkey does not have one best month. It has several, and which one is yours depends on what you came for. The notes below apply across our Turkey tours, whichever route you are considering.
March to May: the sweet spot
Spring is our busiest season for a reason. Istanbul is in tulip season through April, the archaeological sites are green rather than bleached, and you can walk Ephesus at midday without regretting it. Cappadocia is at its best in late April and May, when the valleys are in flower and the balloons fly most mornings.
Pack layers. Central Anatolia sits high, and evenings in Cappadocia can drop close to freezing well into April. If you want the whole country in one trip, spring is when we most often recommend the 15-day Turkish Odyssey, because the long Aegean and Anatolian driving days are genuinely pleasant rather than something to endure.
June to August: coast weather, inland heat
The Mediterranean and Aegean coasts are glorious. Inland is a different proposition: Konya and Cappadocia regularly pass 35°C, and the ruins offer no shade at all. If summer is your only window, we build itineraries that start early, break in the middle of the day, and put the coast at the end.
This is also the season for our shorter Cappadocia trips, which front-load the sightseeing into the first hours after sunrise. The 8-day Cappadocia & Early Christian Anatolia route is built this way, with the valley walking kept optional throughout.
September to early November: the quiet second spring
Our own favorite. The sea is still warm into October, the summer crowds have gone, and the light across Pamukkale and the Aegean is at its best for photographs. Grape and pomegranate harvests are underway in Cappadocia through September.
Faith-based and alumni groups tend to prefer this window, and it is the one that books out first - our faith and pilgrimage routes and the senior and alumni departures both fill their September and October dates earliest.
December to February: cold, cheap, and unexpectedly good
Nobody thinks of Turkey in winter, which is exactly the appeal. Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque without queues. Cappadocia under snow, which is genuinely one of the more remarkable things you will see. Prices drop across the board.
The trade-offs are real: shorter days, a higher chance of balloon flights being canceled for wind, and some coastal hotels closed for the season. Most of our escorted departures pause over winter, so a winter trip is usually a tailor-made one.
